Bus Behaviour
I
Travelling in Israel can be a very interesting experience. This depends on
where you travel from and where you want to go, how many people are on
the bus, and what the mood of the driver is. If you're travelling to the centre
of town, you may have to wait twenty minutes, only to have three buses
come at the same time - two of them empty, of course.


b) The translator must consider the type of text as well as the target reader.
These will determine the language of the translation. Choose the correct answer.

Some linguistic background

Every translation involves a compromise of conflicting claims. One
of the main conflicts we have to deal with is the conflict between
accuracy and appropriacy.
Accuracy: translating all semantic content (meaning) from source
language - SL (English) into target language - TL (Hebrew).
According to Gideon Toury רוקמה ומכ.
Appropriacy: translating the semantic content while creating a natural,
fluent translation as though the text were written originally in the TL.

3) One of the translations above is more appropriate than the other.
Read paragraph 1 and both translations again. Then fill in the correct answers.

Note
Every translation should be fluent, natural, idiomatic. Some texts, however,
call for greater accuracy, e.g. descriptions, instructions, reports, documents, etc.
Here, the precise meaning is very important. With other types of text, e.g. narrative,
descriptive writing and literary texts, much more than the precise meaning should
be conveyed - the style, the tone and atmosphere must also come through.

4) Read paragraph 2 below.
a) Read the accurate translation which has been provided.
b) Make changes where necessary to improve appropriacy.
You will probably have to make some changes in syntax (word order),
lexical items (words, phrases), and grammar.

c) Now review your translation and edit it further.
Try to make your translation natural, as though it was originally written

in Hebrew (רוקמ ומכ).

The number of the bus does not mean much: Four means four in most languages,
but now and then you'll see bus no. 4A and 4B, etc. As a result, you might find
naturally, expects you to know that only 4B goes there. "If you wanted 4B, why
didn't you say so when you got on!" The driver is always right.
